چکیده

Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge, Silver Street, Cambridge CB3 9EW, U.K. (9th August, 1999; revised 10th February, 2000) No physical measurement can be performed with infinite precision. This leaves a loophole in the standard no-go arguments against non-contextual hidden variables. All such arguments rely on choosing special sets of quantum-mechanical observables with measurement outcomes that cannot be simulated non-contextually. As a consequence, these arguments do not exclude the hypothesis that the class of physical measurements in fact corresponds to a dense subset of all theoretically possible measurements with outcomes and quantum probabilities that can be recovered from a noncontextual hidden variable model. We show here by explicit construction that there are indeed such non-contextual hidden variable models, both for projection valued and positive operator valued measurements.

Contextual qubit models from Wigner functions

Wigner functions, and other quasi-probability distributions, have been an important tool in quantum optics for a long time. A quasi-probability distribution is a representation of a quantum state with certain properties. In particular it is a real-valued representation of the state. Of particular interest are states for which a Wigner function is non-negative. Spekkens showed such sets of state...

Non-contextual chocolate ball versus value indefinite quantum cryptography

Some quantum cryptographic protocols can be implemented with specially prepared metaphorical chocolate balls representing local hidden variables, others protected by value indefiniteness cannot. This latter feature, which follows from Belland Kochen-Specker type arguments, is only present in systems with three or more mutually exclusive outcomes. Conversely, there exist local hidden variable mo...

Quantum Cryptographic Security from Contextuality

Quantum mechanics is contextual, that is, the outcome of a measurement does depend on how that value is measured. This somewhat bizarre, non-classical feature is a consequence of the Kochen-Specker theorem, which asserts that there is no non-contextual hidden variable theory that reproduces quantum theory. Contextuality is a property of quantum systems with Hilbert spaces of d > 2, as it can be...

Quantum computation, discreteness, and contextuality

We establish a link between contextuality of quantum mechanics and quantum-mechanical computation. Specifically, we show that no deterministic measurement-based quantum computation evaluating a non-linear function can be described by a non-contextual hidden-variable model. We give examples for such computations derived from quantum codes with suitable transversality properties, and from a count...
